Many times, a person who has suffered a severe broken bone injury as the result of a traumatic event, such as a car, truck, mass transit, bus, train, SEPTA, or other automobile accident, dog bite, or slip and fall, will undergo an Orthopaedic surgery during which an Intramedullary Rod is placed into or against the injured bone.
An Intramedullary Rod, also known as an IM Rod or Intramedullary Nail, is used to stabilize and realign a significant fracture. Specifically, Intramedullary Rods are generally inserted to help repair longer bones such as the tibia or femur. The rod is inserted into the hollow center of the bone to provide more durable, strong, and flexible support and help to properly align the healing bones.

Unfortunately, the insertion is not always completely pain free. Often, persons who have undergone a surgery of this type will experience pain where the rod was inserted. If a person experiences this type of pain, a second surgery may be required to remove the rod.
Cases which require the installation of an Intramedullary Rod or Nail are nearly always caused by significant fractures.
